stenciled table

The Domestic Imperfection has an awesome tutorial on how to stencil a table.

I decided to take on my Nana's mahogany vaneer table that was undamaged over 75 years.  I thought what was there to loose?  I bought a wall stencil that was large enough to cover a big section at one time to make it easy.

 Chevron Zig Zag

tools:
  • wall stencil pattern
  • electric sander
  • white flat paint
  • mahogany stain
  • clear oil rub on poly
  • foam roller
steps:
  1. Sand the top of the table with an electric sander using a fine grit sandpaper
  2. Wipe down the table to remove dust
  3. Lay down the wall stencil and start painting with the foam roller, this gets tricky if you have leafs. Make sure you paint with the leafs in if your planning on using them.
  4. Sand again to smooth out any rough edges that the stencil left behind and take some of the heavy spots off of the paint
  5. Stain the table using a color to match the original table, and wipe off.
  6. Seal the top with an oil base rub on poly.  It is very easy to use and doesn't leave the dreaded bubbles.  Let dry and repeat.
